Mbutch Mjingoma

Mbutch Mjingoma, also known as Daniel Mburu Muhuni, is a percussionist, performer, instructor, and instrument maker from Nairobi, Kenya. He is a co-founder of DebeDebe, a group focused on preserving and promoting Kenyan musical traditions. He is known for his deep knowledge and passion for Kenyan musical instruments and traditions, particularly those of the coastal regions. 


  • Musical Background:

    He is a skilled percussionist with mastery over a wide range of instruments. He is also involved in instrument making. 

  • DebeDebe:

    He co-founded DebeDebe, a group that actively explores, documents, and shares Kenyan musical traditions, especially those related to indigenous instruments and practices. 

  • Preservation Efforts:

    Mbutch has traveled extensively throughout Kenya to connect with communities and learn about their musical heritage, including the Bung'o wind instrument of the Mijikenda people. 

  • Collaboration:

    He collaborated with German musician Sven Kacirek on the "Economic Partnership Agreements" album, which was funded by the Goethe-Institut. 

  • Leadership:

    He is recognized as a leader in the Kenyan music scene, particularly for his dedication to preserving and sharing traditional knowledge.
